At Local Colleges, First-Time Voters Make Their Voices Heard
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Some who voted this election were new to the voting process.
At the University of Pennsylvania, where first lady Michelle Obama visited this week (see related story), there's been a huge push to get out the vote.
Many of the students who voted here at the polling place adjacent to the freshman dormitory were first-time voters.
(New voter:) "I was really proud to vote, I guess. From American History I know that this country fought for freedom, so I just feel really special that I could vote because I know people died for me to have this right."
Poll worker Jonathan Skekloff says some people didn't know what to expect when they stepped into the voting booth:
"There's quite a few people who are unaware of the (Philadelphia ballot) questions on the side."
Has there been a lot of talk on campus about the midterm elections?
"Yeah, Penn Dems and College Republicans had a debate on the economy, Michelle Obama was here. There's a lot of energy surrounding it, so it's exciting to be in college right now."
