Art Sanctuary Set To Kick Off 28th Annual Celebration Of Black Writing Festival

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Art Sanctuary will host the 28th Annual Celebration of Black Writing Festival beginning next week. The festival will attract leading journalists and authors from all across the nation.
"It's not a Black conference," says Art Sanctuary Managing Director Tarana Burke. "It's a conference that celebrates the best in Black culture and Black literature."
Burke says the festival kicks off on May 21st with Jacqueline Woods and the Reading Olympics, then there's a series of events at the Kimmel Center beginning on May 29th.
"We'll be interviewing Joan Myers Brown," says Burke. "We'll have Issa Rae, we'll have Philly Youth Rising. On that Friday, we'll have our Lifetime Achievement Awards. We're honoring Ebony and Jet magazines and Marita Golden. It's being hosted by supermodel Beverly Johnson."
Then on Saturday, June 2nd -- there's the festival at Temple University.
"We'll have Dr. Haki Madhubuti with his new book," Burke adds. "And then Deborah Gregory, who authored the Cheetah Girls book will be here. She's holding an all-girls session on Saturday."
