Arrest Made In Deadly Lawncrest Jewelry Store Robbery
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Police have arrested a second suspect in connection to the murder of a popular owner during a botched jewelry store robbery in Northeast Philadelphia last month.
Obina Onyaih, 27, was arrested Wednesday at 750 Race Street in connection to the October 21 incident during which his alleged accomplice was fatally shot during a shootout with the store's owner.
Police say Onyaih, of the 5400 block of Akron Street, and Kevin Turner entered Glatz Jewelers in the city's Lawndale section and announced a robbery.
"During the course of the robbery, (there was) an exchange of gunfire between the perpetrators and the store owner," Capt. Michael McCarrick said the day of the incident.
The store's owner, 67-year-old William Glatz, was shot and killed during the shootout.
Turner was also shot and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police say Onyaih fled the store and remained on the loose until his arrest on Wednesday. Onyaih has been charged with murder, robbery and related offenses.
Turner escaped from Curran-Fromhold Correctional Facility in the Northeast in the early morning hours of October 12. Deputy police commissioner William Blackburn says Turner had over a dozen previous arrests for drugs, robbery and guns.
