Area Soccer Fans Cheer USA Women's World Cup Semifinal Win
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - Local soccer fans gathered around TVs over lunch today to watch the US women's World Cup team beat France and head to Sunday's championship match (see related story).
The crowd at Tir Na Nog, a sports bar at 16th and Arch Streets in center city Philadelphia, erupted as the US women took a 3-1 lead late in the second half and went on to defeat France.
Jillian Shank, who played for the soccer team at Holy Family University, was watching.
"Ohmigod! I have butterflies for them -- I feel like I'm in the game," she told KYW Newsradio during the match. "I can only imagine how they're feeling right now. It's such a huge accomplishment, especially for the country. I mean, we're going through such hard times right now. It's so nice for everyone to come together for something like this."
The team has plenty of local ties, including midfielder Carli Lloyd of Delran, NJ.
The win puts the US women in the World Cup finals for the first time since they won it all in 1999.
