Forum In Philadelphia: Are Immigrants Good For Our Country?
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - An immigration forum was held this week at the National Museum of American Jewish History.
The panel discussion focused on ways to make cities and businesses more inclusive and welcoming to immigrants.
Phoenix Mayor Greg Stanton raised this question:
"Are immigrants good for this country or not good for this country? I think the people on this panel, the mayors around this country who we work with stand for the proposition that immigration has been great for America, great for our cities, great for our economy and we need to continue in that tradition."
Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney said one change could make a huge difference:
"As we speak here today, Philadelphia does not have Latino captain in the entire police force. That would make a huge difference in the Latino neighborhood. To have someone who leads the district be able to explain and discipline and train and guide and get their officers to do the things that are culturally sensitive."
The discussion was held even as a national effort to reform immigration laws remains stagnant.
