Archdiocese of Philadelphia Kicks Off Its Summer Meals Program

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- The Archdiocese of Philadelphia held a special ceremony today as its Summer Meals Program got underway.
At the Mercy Neighborhood Ministries community center in North Philadelphia, Msgr. Daniel Sullivan, president of the Nutritional Development Services Board, led a blessing of the summer.
"The beginning of each season, we pick one place to come and make a blessing for all of the children and all the sites that we're going to have throughout the summer," he tells KYW Newsradio.
Sullivan says that by the end of the summer, the archdiocese will have fed about 20,000 children in the five-county region.
"You know, there's so many people for a lot of different reasons and the economics of family situations that would not have the availability of these types of meals," he says, noting that the program serves a variety of sites -- from summer camp-type of organizations to neighborhood blocks.
"It's all kinds of programs, these sites that we have, providing food for."
