Archbishop Releases Statement On Main Line School That Dismissed Teacher

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- As Archbishop Charles Chaput weighs in on the firing of a gay Catholic school teacher on the Main Line, the leadership of the school is releasing a statement backing the decision, and saying it will not be reversed or modified.
Archbishop Chaput's released a statement saying schools that describe themselves as Catholic take on the responsibility of teaching the Catholic faith in a manner true to Catholic belief. He goes on to say he's grateful to the Waldron Mercy Academy leadership for how they've handled the situation, saying: "They've shown character and common sense at a moment when both seem to be uncommon."
After Waldron Mercy Academy in Merion sent an email to parents on July 3rd, upwards of 200 gathered to speak out on a move they feel goes against what the school stands for.
But the president of Sisters of Mercy Mid-Atlantic Community sent a letter to parents, faculty, and staff saying they support the decision to not renew Winters' contract, saying leadership acted in accord with the school's fundamental Catholic identity. And that letter says the decision is final and will not be reversed.
