PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Each year Apple goes through thousands of apps in its App Store and recognizes the most noteworthy.
A Twitter owned live broadcast app has just been named the coveted "App of the Year".
Apple has named Periscope the iPhone App of the Year, calling it a "game-changer that made sharing and watching live videos an instant obsession."
Periscope launched in March and was acquired by Twitter for a reported $86 million.
The app, which is available for both apple and android, has been downloaded over 10 million times.
The idea for Periscope was to share the world live, using smartphone technology. It's pretty simple to use: You open the app, click "broadcast," title your subject, start recording and now your Twitter followers can watch your live video stream.
Periscope was not the first app to offer live video streams, there was Ustream Hang w/, and Meerkat but none have been as popular as Periscope.
But it will soon be getting some competition from Facebook - who's has been testing a live video feature on its 1.5 billion strong network.
