Apple Introduces New iPhones For High End, Low End Markets
By KYW technology editor Ian Bush
CUPERTINO, Calif. (CBS) -- Apple Inc. today broke with company tradition to announce not one but two new smartphones.
With what's on the inside about the same as the current iPhone 5, there's the iPhone 5C, "which is priced lower," starting at $99, says engadget.com editor-at-large Darren Murph. He adds that with colorful plastic cases including green, white, blue, pink, and yellow, "It's obviously geared toward the children, tween, and potentially emerging markets."
Or even adults who've been thinking about making the move from a flipphone, Murph says.
For those who want Apple's flagship project, "That's what the 5S is for. It's a little bit faster, it has a new chip that tracks fitness."
And it offers a fingerprint sensor instead of a passcode to unlock the phone, which is available with a gold-colored case in addition to black and white.
The 5S, with a 64-bit processor, starts at $199 for a 16GB model. It and the 5C will be in stores next Friday.
These models will run on Apple's redesigned operating system, iOS 7, which is also available as a free download next Wednesday for iPhones (model 4 and newer), iPads (model 2 and newer), and the fifth-generation iPod Touch.
