Apple Announces Its Latest Product Upgrades and Enhancements
By Ian Bush
CUPERTINO, Calif. (CBS) -- Apple Inc. is showing off a slew of new products that will be out in time for the holidays.
One major upgrade, out next Friday, says Apple executive Phil Schiller, gets a new name:
"We call it iPad Air. And it begins with that beautiful, 9.7-inch Retina display."
Schiller says their new flagship tablet is thinner; lighter, at just one pound; and faster, with the same speedy processor that's in the new iPhone 5S. It starts at $499.
The iPad Mini also gets outfitted with that ultra high-resolution display and is out later next month for $399 and up.
The new iPads come as Nokia releases its first Windows tablet, the Lumia 2520, for the same starting price as the iPad Air, and as Microsoft ships the Surface 2, which starts at $450 -- though the keyboard cover for either tablet running Windows RT will set you back another $120 to $150.
Meanwhile, Apple has decided to give away its operating systems for owners of its computers.
"Mavericks is free," says Apple executive Craig Federighi, who says that any of the company's machines -- "even an iMac introduced way back in 2007" -- can upgrade free, in a single-step.
That's available now in the Apple store.
