Apartment Fire In South Philadelphia
SOUTH PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - Firefighters were on scene, battling a two-alarm blaze in South Philadelphia on Thursday morning.
A row home fire near 4th and McKean Streets was reported at about 5:30 a.m. Heavy smoke and flames were visible when fire crews arrived on the scene. The bulk of the fire appears concentrated in a 3rd floor apartment in the 3-story building.
The building has been evacuated. One person was taken to a local hospital for treatment of smoke inhalation.
Because of the fire, Furness high school in the 1900 block of South 3rd Street is dismissing early due to smoke filtering into the school building.
School district spokesman Fernando Gallardo says 675 students in grades 9-thru-12 are being sent home immediately.
