Animals At The Philadelphia Zoo Beat The Heat
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - Lots of splishing and splashing at the Philadelphia Zoo as its residents try to stay cool during this heat wave.
In "Carnivore Kingdom" a family of giant otters were frolicking in their pool, enjoying cold fish and ice treats. Thor the nearly three-month-old baby (in photo) was learning how to swim.
"And mom and dad take a huge role in caring for the new babies every year," curator Tammy Schmidt said.
(McDevitt:) "How are the swimming lessons going?"
"Wonderfully. He's strong and confident knows where to go now, hollers if he doesn't. He has mom and dad and brothers and sisters running towards him if he needs help."
And the two polar bears Coldylocks and Klondike, in a nearby enclosure, were taking periodic dips in the water and enjoying frozen treats, too.
"Polar bears not only have their water but they have sprinklers and shade structures over exhibits," Schmidt said.
And several giant tortoise were keeping cool in a mud bath.
Some of primates are being kept in climate controlled buildings, and that was fine for the human vistors who were also seeking relief.
