Analysis: Obama Campaign Taking Rick Santorum Seriously

By Larry Kane

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - All of a sudden, the White House has reacted for the first time to the candidacy of Republican Rick Santorum.

Sources have been telling us for days that the White House is now taking the Rick Santorum candidacy seriously. That was borne out yesterday by Obama adviser Robert Gibbs charging that Santorum had crossed the line when he said the President was involved in some 'phony theology' and he called the president the most anti-religion president ever.

Santorum's attack on the president's faith was made Friday and Saturday. Yesterday, he said he wasn't criticizing the presidents faith, only his world view.

With Santorum now leading in national polls and ahead of Mitt Romney in Romney's home state of Michigan, the Democrats can assume that Mitt Romney's nomination is no longer inevitable, although still possible.
