Analysis: Are College Students Getting
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - A new book is making waves. It's called 'Academically Adrift' and it claims that many young college students are not learning.
Philadelphia Community College President Dr. Stephen Curtis says the survey misses a point - that most college students today are not traditional four year students:
"They are full time traditional college age students right out of high school starting college and to be candid you would expect them to be socializing. They're still growing up. they're still maturing. There is a socialization aspect and maturation process going on. But I point out to you that probably half of higher education these days doesn't match that profile."
Temple senior vice provost Peter Jones says college is about more than books and grades:
"One of the things the book is doing also is focusing on development in certain areas and I think people recognize when students go to college whether it's community college or four year colleges they learn a lot in the classroom. They also learn an awful lot outside of the classroom and that's what parents perceive when a child comes home."
