<i>Analysis:</i> A Discussion About Battling Racism And Ethnic Bigotry
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – Leaders around the world are trying to figure out ways to battle racial and ethnic bigotry.
Abe Foxman, head of the anti-defamation league is known as one of the most aggressive fighters of hate in the world. Foxman thinks it's an irony that Europe has laws against public hatred and more violence than we do. But he says that bigotry in our country has its own price:
"In this country there are consequences to being a bigot and that's really our potential. The laws say you can be a bigot but if you are a bigot and if you're in commerce you are not going to do well. If you're a politician you may make it once or twice but in the end run you pay a price for your bigotry."
And now his organization is worried about bullies. Bullying is now a hate crime whether it is recognized by the law or not. 'Because of cyberspace bullying has now gone into inter-space to the point where kids and individuals are committing suicide for things which we though was, oh well that's part of growing up. It not part of growing up," said Foxman.
