Americans Show Broad Support For Armed Guards in Schools, Malls

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- The gun control debate continues, following announcement yesterday of a White House plan for more regulation.
A new CBS News/New York Times survey shows support for one aspect of that plan but also backing for armed guards in schools.
According to the survey, there is support for an increase in armed guards at schools, malls, and public places around the country. In fact, 74 percent of those responding to the poll said they support that view of increased security -- a concept proposed by the NRA.
In this same survey there is overwhelming support for widespread background checks, proposed by President Obama in his address yesterday (see related story). An overwhelming 92 percent said they support background checks for all potential purchasers of guns.
This survey on one of America's most controversial current issues was conducted before the White House task force report on gun safety calling for background checks and other measures.
