After One-Year Reprieve, A South Jersey Catholic High School Slated For Closure

VINELAND, N.J. (CBS) -- A South Jersey Catholic high school that had been spared from closure last year will not escape the same fate this year.
Sacred Heart High School, in Vineland, will be shut down come June.
Last year the school came up with the money to get a reprieve from the Diocese of Camden. But diocese spokesman Peter Feuerherd says the school just couldn't sustain itself.
"The problem was, the enrollment was very low (for) a high school that could do an academic program and pay for itself," he tells KYW Newsradio.
One hundred sixty-eight students now attend the school. Fifty-two will graduate this year, and only 23 children were signed up to attend next fall.
Sacred Heart also continues to carry a significant deficit.
The diocese will offer $1,500 tuition discounts for those who transfer to one of the six high schools the the diocese will continue to operate. The closest to Vineland is St. Joseph High, in Hammonton.
