After Bruising Primary, Pa. Democrats Gather In South Philly For Show of Unity
By Steve Tawa
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Tom Wolf, the Democratic nominee in the Pennsylvania governor's race, sat down today at the Oregon Diner, in South Philadelphia, with the three competitors he defeated in this week's primary.
The event was set up to show party unity despite the negative comments and commercials that aired during the campaign.
The so-called "Unity Breakfast," hosted US congressman Bob Brady, was a private affair in the back of the diner.
Included were Allyson Schwartz, Rob McCord, and Katie McGinty -- all defeated by Wolf -- as well as former Pennsylvania governor Ed Rendell, US senator Bob Casey, and Pennsylvania Democratic Party chairman Jim Burn.
After they ate and talked, Brady and Rendell said the others would not be speaking. But Brady said they're all on the same page -- ready, willing, and able to defeat the incumbent governor, Tom Corbett, in November.
Both Brady and Rendell said that all attendees were looking forward to working together to make Pennsylvania's next governor a Democrat.
We did get the rundown on who at the breakfast downed scrapple and eggs, and who preferred grapefruit. Unfortunately, Brady pulled a preemptive strike and said that was off the record.
He did add that Tom Wolf has learned proper cheesesteak etiquette, including throwing the necktie over the shoulder and the proper lean, to make sure you didn't wear any drippings.
