African American Children's Book Fair Returns To Philadelphia

By Cherri Gregg

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - The African American Children's Book Fair is today at the Community College of Philadelphia.

The event features a colorful selection of books for children of all ages.

"People who read books that reflect their own images are more inclined to be better readers," says Vanesse Lloyd-Sgbati, who founded the African American Book Project 23 years ago.

She says a big part of the fair is that the children can meet the professionals who bring their favorite characters to life:

"Imagine walking in the door, you get a free book and you walk across the room and there is that person who wrote and in some cases illustrated the book."

The fair will also include workshops and more for everyone.

"A book does open up a world of opportunity," says Lloyd-Sgbati.

Thousands are expected to attend the fair, which runs from 1pm to 3pm.
