Advocates, Politicians Gather In Hopes Of Making Philly Schools A Bit Greener

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Philadelphia advocates and politicians convened for a press conference Thursday at City Hall in hopes of turning Philly schools just a bit little greener, but there will be a lot of red tape to go through first.
Penn Environment released their report on why solar panels would shine in Philadelphia schools. Councilman Derek Green is introducing the resolution to City Council.
"There are already 40-something school districts that do solar panels across the Commonwealth."
He says though they are in the very beginning stages. The panels would bring 750 union jobs, reduce pollution and lower building costs, but funding would be the issue.
Green says installations and maintenance costs would likely be split between private and public funding.
"You have social impact bonds, we have environmental-energy savings contracts, and another private public partnership."
He says although there is no definite plan to fund the solar panels, they will look to other cities that have solar panels as an example.
