School Administrator Admits: When Snow Falls, We Sweat
HORSHAM, Pa. (CBS) - At least one local school superintendent says the decision to close schools during winter weather can sometimes be the most difficult they have to make as administrators.
Hatboro-Horsham School District superintendent Curtis Griffin says the decision to keep schools open -- or not -- during winter weather is more complex than one might perceive it to be.
Griffin (above) says the timing of the weather is critical.
"The most difficult decisions to make are those that happen when it starts to snow or it stops right in your decision window," he explained to KYW Newsradio about noontime on Wednesday, as the snow was tapering off before an expected afternoon resurgence. "You either look brilliant or you look foolish, based on your call, when it happens at that time."
He says they take the safety of their students and employees into consideration while factoring in the number of allocated "snow days" they may have remaining for the school year, as well what the rest of the season might bring.
And Griffin admits that no matter what decision he makes, his office still gets phone calls and e-mails from parents questioning his judgment.
