Activists Target Problem Gambling At SugarHouse Casino
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Governor Ed Rendell's appearance on 60 Minutes, last Sunday, inspired a group of casino activists in Philadelphia. It inspired them to stage a small protest at Sugarhouse, on the Delaware, Thursday night.
Half a dozen members of Casino-Free Philadelphia walked into SugarHouse about 5:30 and asked a manager for the casino's plan-- required by state law-- to address problem gambling in the casino.
The manager did not want the conversation taped, but Lily Cavanaugh of the anti-casino group summed up her response.
"She did say that if there's somebody addicted in the casino that's asking for help that they have services for that person, but she couldn't tell us what those services were."
Cavanaugh says the group is trying to make the point that -- as Rendell said in the 60 Minutes interview -- "people lose their paychecks" in casinos and they believe the state is not doing what's required to prevent problem gambling.
