2 Philadelphia men arrested after recklessly driving onto sidewalk, striking 13-year-old in Abington Township
Two men from Philadelphia were arrested after recklessly driving up onto the sidewalk and hitting a 13-year-old girl Friday afternoon in Abington Township, police announced.
According to Abington Township police, at around 3:45 p.m., two men were speeding through the intersection of Jenkintown Road and Abington Avenue when they ran a red light and struck another car that had the right-of-way.
Police identified the two Philadephia men in the car as Jason MacDonald, 21, and Goldwin Prince, 21.
After the initial crash, MacDonald drove the car up onto the sidewalk and hit a 13-year-old girl standing nearby talking to a crossing guard, police said. The 13-year-old had just been helped across the street by a crossing guard before she was hit, according to police.
Police said MacDonald and Prince then jumped out of the car and started to run away before they were detained by Abington police officers and arrested.
According to police, MacDonald will receive charges related to aggravated assault, reckless driving and fleeing an accident. Police said Prince was armed with an illegally-owned handgun when he was arrested and will be charged with firearms violations and possession of marijuana.
The 13-year-old, who was hit by the car, sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was taken to Abington Jefferson Hospital.
Abington police are still investigating the crash.
