AAA Warns Consumers About Type Of Gasoline That May Eventually Reach The Delaware Valley
By Tim Jimenez
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - AAA released a warning late last week about E-15 gasoline, which is only found in the Midwest, but could eventually make its way east.
E15 means 15 percent ethanol and 85 percent gasoline. The Environmental Protection Agency approved its use over the summer.
This was supported by the ethanol industry, but opposed by car companies who cite concerns with damage to cars and that damage not protected under warranties.
Now, AAA is chiming in, wanting sales to stop.
"AAA's concern is the potential impact that E15 is going to have on the vehicles that are not really designed for its use," says Mid-Atlantic spokesman Jim Lardear.
The EPA says it's okay for cars 2001 and newer. AAA says it needs more testing and consumers need more information.
Bob Dinneen, CEO of the Renewable Fuels Association, strongly disagrees with this.
"E15 has been the most studied fuel in the history of the Environmental Protection Agency," he said.
The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection says it will take years for the fuel to be widely used. So far, it's only sold at around a dozen stations in the midwest.
Dinneen saying AAA is, "making a mountain out of a molehill."
