AAA Mid-Atlantic: New Jersey Gas Prices Heading Higher
TRENTON, N.J. (CBS/AP) — An approved gas tax in New Jersey is expected to push prices at the pump up by more than 20 cents a gallon, but motorists in the Garden State are already paying more to fill their tanks.
AAA Mid-Atlantic says the average price of a gallon of regular gas in the state on Friday was $2.02, up 4 cents from last week. That's also higher than the price from a year ago, when motorists were paying $1.96.
The price increase comes after OPEC announced a preliminary deal last week that would limit oil production. That caused an increase in oil prices.
The national average gas price on Friday was $2.26, up 4 cents from last week. But that's still lower than the national average from a year ago, when motorists were paying $2.30.
A package of bills passed the senate and the assembly on Friday that trades a series of tax cuts in return for a 23 cent increase in the state gas tax.
