A Supermarket For Camden, NJ, At Long Last
By David Madden
CAMDEN, N.J. (CBS) -- A new supermarket is coming to the city of Camden, NJ. And that's a big deal, since the city hasn't had one in more than 30 years.
The planned Shop Rite store, on the Admiral Wilson Boulevard, will be 75,000 square feet and will anchor a retail strip of stores in the East Camden neighborhood that Mayor Dana Redd believes is long overdue.
"Not only will Shop Rite provide residents with accessible, healthy foods," Redd said today, "but will also have enormous positive economic impacts on our neighborhood and citywide development."
Not to mention badly needed tax ratables for Camden.
The "Admiral Wilson Plaza" is still a project on paper, and will open in a couple of years assuming the financing and regulatory approvals come along.
Last fall, plans were announced to open a Fresh Grocer along Haddon Avenue, but that chain is still in lease negotiations with a developer.
