A New Park Is Coming To South Camden's Waterfront

CAMDEN, N.J., (CBS) -- Camden County officials broke ground this week for a new five-acre park along the waterfront in the southern part of Camden.
Neighbors have clamored for years for some open space amidst the run down industrial buildings in that part of town. That led county freeholders to act.
"They live in an area that, sometimes, is not pleasant to live in because of some of the surrounding uses. But their quality of life could be improved drastically if they had a park and access to the Delaware River," Freeholder Director Lou Cappelli said.
The land, which sits next to an abandoned factory, will have to be cleaned up before they lay down sod and such. It'll be built to recover some four million gallons of storm water runoff every year to help keep flooding down in the neighborhood. Phoenix Park is expected to open next spring.
