A Modest Tuition Increase For Students At Rutgers University
TRENTON, N.J. (CBS) - Tuition is going up, again, for 56,000 students of Rutgers University in New Jersey, but not by as much as it could have, at least for the majority of students who reside in the Garden State.
The average in-state hike is 1.6 percent for tuition and fees which come out to about an extra $195 a year on average. It would have been about more than twice that, were it not for a last-minute change proposed by board of trustees chairman Ralph Izzo.
"We're in very challenging economic times and our students and their families are under enormous economic pressure," Izzo said.
Not to mention the state, which kept funding to the school consistent with last year. Tack on room and board, and the annual increase for New Jersey students is about $550 or 2.3 percent more all told.
The trustees approved an average 5 percent hike across the board for out-of-state Rutgers students, taking their tuition to almost 23,000, twice that charged to those in state.
