A Look Inside The Sloan Sports Analytics Conference

By Spike Eskin

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – Advanced sports analytics are coming, whether you like it or not.

The MIT Sloan Sports Analytics Conference has grown from fewer than 300 people in its first year, 2007, to nearly 3,000 people in 2013, including representatives from almost every major sports team in the United States.

Founded by Houston Rockets general manager Daryl Morey, the conference examines everything from how to better express analytics to coaches, players and the public, to advances in analytics themselves.

This year, panels on sports gambling, the relationship between NFL analytics and coaches, and new ways to look at NBA defense highlighted the conference.

Moe Koltun of Roto Analysis and CBS Philly's Fantasy Sports Edge attended this year's conference, and gave the highlights as he saw them. Listen to the podcast below to find out which NFL coaches are most accepting of advanced analytics, how to really tell who is a good post defender in the NBA, and who really attends Sloan.
