A Labor Day Parade With a Serious Economic Message

Hundreds of people took part in the 2010 Labor Day parade along Philadelphia's Columbus Boulevard, but, despite the weather, it was hardly clear skies.

KYW's John Ostapkovich reports this march occurred in a climate of continued recession, pressures on public unions that got the Mayor booed and had these postal workers chanting "Five day, no way" about the prospect of scaling back home delivery.

The Longshoremen's union dumped Del Monte pineapples into the river. Local 1291 Business Manager Boise Butler on why:

"We're taking 170 of my workers with full-time benefits, make a very decent living, okay, $23.50 an hour, okay? And we replacing them with workers making anyway between $9 and $12 an hour, with no benefits. That's a disgrace."

Political signs sprouted, mostly for embattled Democrats as the mid-term elections loom in less than two months.
