Generations of area skiers and snowboarders took their first gliding steps on snow at Spring Mountain in the heart of Montgomery County. It is one of the few remaining family owned and operated learning areas that concentrates on catapulting young beginners into a lifetime sport. Here's what you'll find.
Spring Mountain is a compact resort with 8 interconnecting trails, 2 tubing chutes and a "Mole Hill" for tots, served by 6 lifts, including a Magic Carpet for the youngest. The slopes and trails accommodate a variety of skill levels, but are concentrated in the beginner and intermediate range. To emphasize the focus on bringing new skiers and riders into the sport, Rick and Gayle Buckman who own the resort offer a program that allows fourth graders from all local schools to ski free, anytime. They even throw in a free lesson.
Two parking lots are available and early birds can catch a spot in front of the main lodge where you'll find the ticket desk, ski school and a large, well stocked rental shop. It's a rustic facility with plenty of seating and changing room and a cafeteria. From there it's just a short glide to the main lift and a ride to the summit. More advanced skiers and riders can then cruise to a connecting trail that accesses the most challenging slopes on the north side of the mountain. Another connecting trail brings you back to the lodge.
As an added attraction, Spring Mountain features four-season Zip Line Canopy tours. You don a helmet and harness, then hook yourself to a line that runs above the slopes and through the trees, at times above tree-top level. It's an adrenalin pumping ride that compliments a day on the snow.
Spring Mountain features a terrain park and a half-pipe. The entire area is lighted for night skiing, riding and tubing.
What it costs: An all-area adult and youth ticket checks in at $29 midweek, $39 on weekends and holidays. Beginner area tickets are $19 midweek, $29 weekends and holidays. Seniors (60 – 69) ski for $10 weekdays and $30 on weekends and holidays. Skiers over 70 pay $5 midweek, $15 on weekends and holidays.
