A Center City Church Serves Christmas Breakfast to Hundreds of The Needy

By Tim Jimenez

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- In the spirit of Christmas, a breakfast was being served this morning to hundreds of needy people at a church in center city Philadelphia.

At Arch Street United Methodist Church on North Broad Street, it is the annual Christmas breakfast for the homeless and others in need.

People were filing in before 8am.  Organizers say about 400 people were expected for the hot Christmas breakfast that includes eggs, bacon, hash browns, grits, pastries, orange juice, and of course coffee.

About 100 volunteers were giving their time this morning, out of the goodness of their hearts.  They will also be handing out blankets at the end of the breakfast to those who needs them.

Several of the volunteers said this is what  Christmas is all about: it's not just a season of giving gifts for under the tree, but giving time and energy to those in need.  Just like the first Christmas, just like things that Christians have been celebrating on this day.
