Sen. Toomey: Sanctuary Cities Are Not A "Defensible Policy"
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Pennsylvania Senator Pat Toomey spoke with Talk Radio 1210 WPHT morning host Chris Stigall about "sanctuary cities" following the death of Kathryn Steinle in San Francisco by an illegal immigrant that was deported five times.
"I don't think this is defensible policy."
However, he thinks that passing Kate's Law or some other law to do something about "sanctuary cities" will be not be without a fight.
"There's a lot of people on the left that want sanctuary cities to do this so they'll be fight...I'm not sure how it's going to play out in the end, but I think the next battlefield is going to be legislation of some kind that would withhold some of portion of federal funding to a city that decides to be a sanctuary city. That's really the only mechanism that I can think of off hand, there might be others but it's one of the tried and true mechanisms that the federal government can use to influence the behavior of cities and states and I think that's coming."
Overall, Toomey is playing the "let's wait and see" game on whether or not Congress will do anything about it though.
"I don't know where the votes will be. I don't know that this has been tested with the vote on either the House or Senate floor in a while. It could be and I'm not aware of it, but I'm pretty sure we're going to have a vote soon that will address this and then the President will weigh in one way or the other probably and we'll see if Congress has the will to do something about it."
