7-Year-Old NJ Boy Battling Illness Becomes Police Officer For A Day
GLOUCESTER TOWNSHIP, N.J. (CBS) — With sirens and dozens of officers saluting, Gloucester Township, New Jersey's newest, and by far youngest ever, police officer arrived to take the oath of office at township police headquarters, after first slipping on his new police garb over his Spiderman shirt.
7-year-old Liam Lindsey became Officer Liam Lindsey after first being surprised by officers at his home, then whisked off to become what he's always dreamed of being, a police officer.
"I just like police officers," Liam explained.
Long before he joined the officers fighting crime, Liam proved what he's made of-taking on a fierce enemy, cancer, diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia at age 4, enduring chemotherapy for the past three years.
"He just has a big heart," his mom Lauren explained.
There were gifts to go with Laim's new badge, a tour of headquarters and even a chance to command a K-9 dog.
Donning SWAT gear, Liam smiled as he worked the controls guiding a mini SWAT robot around the parking lot.
While it's true Liam is the only officer to ever patrol in a booster seat, officers in Gloucester Township say this kindergarten cop, at age seven, has already shown more than enough strength and courage to earn him an adult-sized commendation for bravery.
