$58-Million Expansion Project On AC Expressway Will Be Completed By Memorial Day Weekend

HAMMONTON, N.J. (CBS) - After three years, the people who run the Atlantic City Expressway say they expect their westbound expansion project to be finished just in time for the Memorial Day weekend.
"Anyone who travels home on a Sunday night in the summer will recognize the advantage of having this third lane of traffic open," South Jersey Transportation Authority spokesman Kevin Rehmann said.
The authority spent $58-million over five years to put in a third lane westbound from the Garden State Parkway to route 73, a 24 mile stretch that turned into a parking lot on summer Sunday evenings.
"Most people will exit the expressway at exit 28, which is state highway 54 in Hammonton and go north or Route 73," Rehmann said. "So we expect a lot of the traffic to exit our roadways at those points."
That's not to say you won't see the occasional work crew putting the finishing touches on the project. But they won't get in the way of any rush hours.
Studies have shown that a good deal of that westbound summer traffic leave the expressway by Exit 33. There's no push to expand to a third lane for the remaining 11 miles to Washington Township, at least, not yet.
