CHESTER, Pa. (CBS) – Dozens of residents were displaced after a four-alarm fire ripped through an apartment complex in Delaware County early Monday morning.
The fire started at about 12:30 a.m. at the Wallingford Estates complex on Madison Street in Chester.
Fire officials believe the blaze may have started in an apartment on the third floor and it quickly spread to neighboring apartments.
When firefighters arrived on scene, they encountered heavy smoke and flames coming from the roof of the building. Firefighters were able to bring the blaze under control in about 45 minutes.
Authorities say 45 people were forced out by the fire, which destroyed or damaged 25 apartments. No injuries were reported.
Officials with the Red Cross were at the scene early Monday to assist those who were affected by the fire. In all, the Red Cross assisted 21 families, 55 people with money for food, clothing, shoes, and winter coats. Four families who didn't have a place to go will also be provided lodging courtesy of the Red Cross.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
