$40,000 Reward Offered In July 1st Street Corner Robbery-Murder In Society Hill

By Mike DeNardo and Oren Liebermann

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- A reward is being offered for information that will help police find the gunman who killed a Fishtown man a week ago in Society Hill.

Police are hoping the $40,000 reward will help them find the man who killed 32-year-old Michael Hagan, an IT consultant and Drexel University graduate.

He was found shot in the chest at Fourth and Lombard Streets in the early morning hours of Sunday, July 1st. Police say Hagan was out with two friends at Morgan's Pier, along Columbus Boulevard.

Homicide captain James Clark says Hagan took a cab to 4th and Market Streets and then started walking south on Fourth, where a gunman took Hagan's wallet and keys and shot him in the chest.

Hagan's family joined detectives Monday morning at a press conference at police headquarters, asking anyone who saw anything in the area of the crime to come forward.

The victim's father, Michael Hagan Sr., says his son loved the vibrancy of the city.

"He was street smart. He lived over here. He loved it over here," said Hagan. "And he wasn't moving nowhere else."

He says he worries whether young city residents and visitors have a false sense of security.

"They're being picked off, one at a time, by these predators -- by these murderers," Hagan said today. "These guys have got to be caught. I'm just praying that someone will call about this."

Police say they gathered some evidence at the scene, and they are reviewing surveillance video from the area to spot the gunman, but they say they need the public's help. A friend with Hagan during the shooting was unconscious, possibly because he had been assaulted.

"We need a description. We need a travel of flight. Did he get away on foot? On bike? Did he have an accomplice? We believe somebody saw something," said Captain James Clark of the Philadelphia Police Department's Homicide Division.

The $40,000 reward is being offered for information in the case -- $20,000 from the City of Philadelphia and $20,000 from the Citizens Crime Commission.

Police say anyone with information should call the Philadelphia Police Department's homicide division or the Citizens Crime Commission at 215-546-TIPS.
