4 Kids Saved from Strawberry Mansion House Fire

City firefighters helped rescue four children from a house fire in Strawberry Mansion early this morning.

KYW's Al Novack reports that all the children were listed in stable condition at St. Christopher's Hospital.

The one-alarm blaze was discovered around 2:30am inside a home near 30th and Cumberland.

Denzel Davis, 19 (right), says his mom -- who owns the home -- was at work and he had been sleeping near the front door:

"The smoke woke me up and I jumped out of the house. The whole neighborhood tried helping us, and fortunately the fire department came and got everybody out of the house safe and sound."

Engine 45, located just four blocks away, was out of service on a "brownout" (periodic shutdown mandated by the city due to budget problems), but Ladder 14, which uses the same fire station, arrived quickly and removed Denzel's brothers -- two 15-year-olds and a 14-year-old -- and his three-year-old sister.

Davis says the fire may have started in the kitchen, but there was no immediate official word on the cause.

Fire officials say the blaze was under control within 15 minutes.
