PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Philabundance hosted its 3rd Annual Cupcake Smash on Saturday, an event to raise money for the organization as it tries to address hunger issues in the Delaware Valley.
40 competitors, half amateur, half professional invaded PYT in the the Piazza at Schmidts in Northern Liberties with icing, batter and lots of creative toppings.
Alison Otterbein used everything but the kitchen sink when she thought of her cupcakes.
"It is a brownie cupcake," Otterbien said, "with salted caramel, toasted coconut filling, Malibu whipped cream icing, chocolate drizzle, shortbread cookie and a vanilla ice cream filled straw.
Tony Luke of Philadelphia cheesesteak fame was one of the judges. He says you'd have to long and hard to find an event like this anywhere else you go.
"When you think of cupcakes, you're not thinking of this," Luke said. "This is cupcakes on massive steroids. I mean it's just the flavors are just so inventive and so complex. I love doing this event."
Marla DelSordo, director of communications at Philabundance, says the event continues to grow every year and they surpassed their goal of raising enough money to put 20,000 meals in the community. Win or lose, the competitors seemed to enjoy that part of the event the most.
"I work up here, even North of here in a not so great neighborhood," Otterbein said. "I see people struggling and it is very important for me to give back to the community."
