CHOP Opens A New Pediatric Care Facility

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- A ribbon cutting ceremony was held this morning for Children's Hospital of Philadelphia's new pediatric care facility at 48th and Market Streets.
The Nicholas and Athena Karabots Primary Care Facility will serve low-income families in the West Philadelphia community.
The ribbon was cut by VIPs that included philanthropist Nicholas Karabots and his wife Athena, who gave $7.5 millon to help to create the new CHOP pediatric care center.
In addition to cutting-edge health care, there are also programs available like a national school readiness program for kids aged six months to five years, where a new book is incorporated into the doctor visits.
Pediatrician Trude Haecker, who oversees the Reach Out and Read program, says, "Children who read, do better in school and their language improves significantly by being read to. We know they have better success in school and they learn to read faster."
The 52,000-square-foot, environmentally sustainable building was designed to accommodate 45,000 patient visits a year.
