3+ Years In Prison For Temple Student In Parkway Hit-Run
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- One former Temple University student is heading to prison and another is back in law school, but still recovering from a hit-and-run accident earlier this year that nearly killed him.
Nicholas Hasselback, 23 (above), was sentenced on Monday to 3-6 years in prison for the hit-run crash last April on the Benjamin Franklin Parkway. He admitted he was speeding when he smashed into pedestrian Tony Foltz -- coincidentally also a Temple student -- as Foltz crossed the Parkway with friends (see previous story).
Richard Foltz, Tony's father, says justice has been done with this sentencing.
"There is no happiness here. We thank the DA's office, we thank the judge for doing his job," said Richard Foltz on Monday.
Tony Foltz was in a coma for days and hospitalized for months with countless broken bones and injuries, including a battered skull. His mother testified that her brilliant son, then nearing law school graduation, had to start his rehab literally at zero.
"(He) couldn't count to three, couldn't do a ten-piece puzzle when he first arrived at Magee (Rehab)," recalls prosecutor Lynne O'Brien. "Now he's back in law school, and hopefully he will graduate and pass the bar."
He still faces more surgery as he recovers.
