3 On Your Side: What To Buy & What To Skip This 4th of July

By Jim Donovan

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - Are you ready for the 4th of July holiday? As some celebrate the nation's birthday with parades and cookouts, others will head straight to the malls.

In terms of sales you're not going to find the amount of deals that we saw during the Memorial Day holiday, but this long weekend is a rare opportunity to get discounts on items while they're still in season. "We combed through 6,000 deals that we published last July, in 2012, to offer consumers money saving shopping advice for the month of July," says Mark LoCastro of Dealnews.com.

If sales from past years are any indication, then Dealnews.com says at the top of your shopping list should be summer clothes.

"July 4th marks the start of the summer apparel clearance season which means you can actually get clothing while they're in season and get it at pretty steep discounts. Last year we saw select summer apparel on average at 60 percent off," according to LoCastro.

If you've been waiting to buy a new grill, now may be the time to bite too.

"You'll see some great discounts starting early in the week, because July 4th is on a Thursday and it will extend all throughout the weekend so consumers can expect to see discounts up to $75 off on average for gas grills and all the way up to $160 off," LoCastro says. Those grill discounts will continue to get better as the summer progresses.

So what should you hold off on buying?

Well patience rules when it comes to patio furniture. While you may see some discounts now, if you can wait until August or September you'll save even more. That's when stores cut prices dramatically in order to clear out inventory in order to make space for fall and winter items.
