3-On Your Side: Thred Up Clothes Swap

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- It seems like no sooner do you buy kids clothes, than they've outgrown them and all those trips to the mall can add up. But 3-On Your Side Consumer Reporter Jim Donovan tells us about a new way that parents can get what they need at a fraction of the cost.

One after another Darlene Jarek takes inventory of slightly used and even new clothes that she got for about $30 dollars.

She says, "This one here is brand new, the tag is still is still on it. If you were to buy all of these separate it would cost you at least a few hundred dollars easily, even off a clearance rack." Darlene uses Thred Up, an online site dedicated to helping parents swap clothes conveniently.

Carly Fauth is a consulting mom for Thred Up. According to Fauth, you first have to create a description of what you are trying to unload. She says, "They would describe different details about the sweater, if had a zipper or buttons, that type of thing." Carly created a box from stuff her son Ryker has outgrown. Everything goes in a postal service home pick box -- supplied for free by Thred Up and listing a box is completely free.

But let's say you want to get some stuff. Carly says, "You would go on our site and you can browse boxes, you can browse by gender, by size." If you find a box you like, you can buy it for $15.95.

Darlene says that the items that she got in her two boxes were impeccable and Carly says, "Sometimes people will send you brand new clothes so that's when you feel that you got a steal"

Here's an important note for anyone interested in Thred up - you can't just buy clothes, you also have to have a contribute boxes periodically. It's all about the swap and by the way, Thred Up is also listing boxes of toys too.
