By Jim Donovan
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- There are thousands of toys on the market this holiday season. But less than two weeks from Christmas, some of the year's biggest hits are already selling out. 3 On Your Side Consumer Reporter Jim Donovan tells us which items are flying off shelves.
It seems that every time where you look this time of year there's another toy commercial. So what toys are in demand?
Gooey balloons, hand held helicopters and Justin Bieber dolls appear to selling well this holiday.
For under $20 toys like Angry Birds, Fireflyz and Xia Xia hermit crabs are doing well. Chris Byrne of TimeToPlayMag.com says, "They run around just like regular hermit crabs. They're little robotic crabs, they've got a whole sort of tropical Caribbean theme."
On the higher end, there's the Ninjago Lego Village and the Skylander Spyro Adventure, a new kind of video game that uses little action figures.
If you child is too young for an iPad, how about the Leap-Pad? It's one of several educational tablets for little kids that are currently big sellers. Byrne says, "It's got an art studio, it's got an organizer. You tell me what a four year old needs to organize, but it still teaches them life skills."
The average American will spend $300 on toys per child this year. Sixty percent of that money will be spent from October to Christmas eve.
