3 On Your Side: Options For Unwanted Gifts

By Jim Donovan

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- We all get them from time to time, presents that don't exactly fit our taste or style. Around the holidays there may have been more than one dud under the tree. 3 On Your Side Consumer Reporter Jim Donovan joins us with some advice on various ways that you can deal with unwanted gifts.

Let's face it, when it comes to holiday gifts, some just don't make the grade. Flash Gordon sneakers, a money purse, or how about a bird cage with a homemade bird inside? Are they your idea of a great gift? Probably not.

While many people opt to return unwanted gifts, there are other options. First, try to swap or sell them. Check out plasticjungle.com to exchange gift cards. You can trade out video games and movies at goozex.com. Or try selling your unwanted clothes at recycleyourfashions.com.

Next, consider donating your unwanted gifts. If those gold running shorts from your eccentric Uncle Al are destined for the charity heap, check out local charities at Give.org or your local goodwill store at Goodwill.org.

Finally think about regifting. In fact, nearly 60 percent of people have regifted or plan on regifting in the future. That's a 7 percent increase from 2005. But do avoid regifting items that are a dead giveaway such as candles, random books and CDs, old bath products and pens.
