3-On Your Side: Gas Promotions
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- While the price of gas continues to slowly fall, it hasn't fallen far enough! The price of a gallon of regular unleaded gas is still about a dollar higher than it was this time last year. So 3-On Your Side Consumer Reporter Jim Donovan went looking for some ways to save.
Rita Cangialosi pays $65 to fill up her SUV, so she's constantly looking for ways to save money. Her latest find is a promotion from Kellogg's. Buy 10 boxes of select Kellogg's cereal, send in the UPC codes along with a rebate form, and you'll get a $10 prepaid Mastercard that you can use to purchase gas. Another promotion from Kellogg's offers a $5 gas card for entering just 4 special codes online. You'll have to wait several weeks to get both cards by mail.
If you don't like to wait, then you may want to head over to CVS and look for the gas pump icon in the weekly circular. Now through August 28th when you buy $30 worth of featured products, and swipe your extra care rewards card, you'll earn a $10 gift card to use at Exxon, Mobil, Shell or BP.
In fact even the oil companies are offering discounts. You can save if you sign up between now through Thursday for Exxon-Mobil's Speedpass Credit Program. They'll send you a device, which tracks your purchases. From the time of registration, Pennsylvania and Delaware drivers have 60 days to save 15 cents on every gallon of gas up to 100 gallons. You'll get a $15.00 credit on your statement. New Jersey drivers can't participate in the 15 cents off a gallon promotion, but when they register for the device, they'll get a $20 gas gift card instead.
Financial Consultant Edward Sanchez says, "Really it's just a ploy or an advertisement to pull you in to entice you to use their service." Sanchez thinks the interest rates are often too high, as much as 25 percent, and the average 2% rebate is too low. He says, "For every $80 tank of gas you put in your car you're going to have a $1.60 reward waiting for you." He thinks a better deal is to use your main credit card to make all of your reward-earning purchases.

That's what Rita did. Her patience paid off when Discover recently offered a special promotion on gas. Rita Cangialosi says with $190 worth of reward dollars she was able to get $380 worth of gas gift cards.
