3 On Your Side: 3 Year College Degrees

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Some say college is the best four years of your life. But in this tough economy, the thought of paying for it, is causing some people to change their plans.

But that college degree doesn't have to be out of reach. 3 On Your Side's Jim Donovan found there could be a way for students or parents to save a bundle by speeding up the process.

In this economy, paying for college is becoming increasingly difficult. But a growing number of universities are offering a cost cutting solution, a formal three year graduation plan.

"It's going to be thousands and thousands of dollars in savings," said Ed Blaguszewski with UMass Amherst.

Students enrolled in a three year degree program at UMass can take extra courses during the school year for no extra cost.

"The value of your education is not discounted at all. You're doing the same amount of study, research, engagement in your college career as a student who is here four years," said Blaguszewski.

With in-state costs at running about $20,000 a year, finishing in three years could mean significant savings.

Some don't think this is the smartest way to get a degree.

"For many, many students I think three years is probably not enough time to really get the educational experiences they're going to need," said Debra Humphreys, with the Association of American Colleges and Universities.

Even UMass agrees the three year program isn't for everyone. But for the right person, it could be an economic lifesaver.

"We want to give students different choices, other alternatives. This is a good way to save some money and invest in your future," said Blaguszewski.

There are schools in our region offering three year programs, including Arcadia University and Holy Family University.
