3 New Jersey Turnpike Toll Takers Charged With Skimming Toll Payments
WESTHAMPTON TOWNSHIP, N.J. (CBS) - Three New Jersey Turnpike toll takers have been suspended after being charged with skimming thousands of dollars in revenue at a Burlington County interchange.
William Fagan, Glenn Huryan and John Filippine, all veteran turnpike employees, are now charged with theft.
Turnpike spokesman Tom Feeney says an internal audit uncovered the problem last month.
"These guys were taking tickets from Interchange 3 [in Bellmawr], using them at Interchange 5 [in Westhampton]. So a car that came through would show a one-dollar toll even if the car happened to have come from someplace much further away," he explained.
The driver would be charged the full toll and the trio allegedly pocketed the difference, which totaled about $10,000 since January.
It was not immediately clear how long this may have actually been going on. That's just one of the things state police are looking into.
If the trio are found guilty, they'll be fired.
