2nd District City Council Election Decided By Absentee Ballots
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - A review of the paper ballots cast in Philadelphia's primary election continues, but it appears that they will not affect the outcome of one close race.
State representative Kenyatta Johnson is still in the lead in the Democratic primary for city council in the second district to replace the retiring Anna Verna. He was 72 votes ahead of candidate Barbara Capozzi (pictured) after the unofficial machine count, last week. His lead shrunk to just 46 votes after absentee and provisional ballots were counted. Johnson said in a statement he was gratified by the results.
Capozzi's spokesperson Antoinette Johnson says Capozzi was disappointed and left open the possibility that she may seek a recount, "As for the final election results, she's considering all options in regards to next steps. It is in the city's best interests that residents of the second district get the last say in who represents them in city council," Antoinette Johnson says.
The other close race -- for the Republican nominee for mayor -- is still up in the air.
