2nd Annual Cupcake Competition In Northern Liberties Will Benefit Philabudance
By Tim Jimenez
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- How does a "fried chicken cupcake" sound? Bakers will share their wildest cupcake concoctions this Saturday in Northern Liberties, to benefit a Philadelphia food bank.
It's the second annual "Cupcake Smash," at the Piazza at Schmidt's.
"Come hungry to help the hungry," says Marlo DelSordo with Philabundance. She says contestants -- both amateur and professional bakers -- will bring their outrageous cupcakes to the piazza. Celebrity judges pick two winners, and those in attendance pick their favorite.
Not sure what to expect? Here's a taste from last year.
"The one winning cupcake was based on a pistachio-crusted lamb burger. The other winning cupcake was a chocolate covered cannoli inspired cupcake [in photo]."
DelSordo says they raised enough money last year for 6,800 meals for people in need.
"This year we're hoping to provide 10,000 meals as a result of Cupcake Smash," she tells KYW Newsradio.
The event is from 1pm to 5pm. Tickets are on sale online for $20, or you can purchase them for $25 at the gate.
